Coastal Walk
Stretching along the stunning coastline between Town Beach and Lighthouse Beach, Port Macquarie’s Coastal Walk is a showstopper of a seaside stroll. With the Pacific Ocean on one side and coastal heath on the other, this 9 km return trail delivers constant ocean views, lookout points, and a chance to spot dolphins and whales (May–November). The path is well-formed and mostly flat, making it accessible for walkers of all fitness levels.
Highlights & What to See
- Tacking Point Lighthouse: A perfectly preserved 1879 lighthouse perched on a rocky headland – one of the oldest in Australia, with panoramic views and a great whale-watching spot.
- Miners Beach: A quiet, clothing-optional beach that feels a world away from the main town; access via a short side track from the walk.
- Shelley Beach: A sheltered cove with calm waters, ideal for a dip or a picnic stop.
- Lookout Points: Several benches and platforms along the way, including a dramatic viewpoint over the rock platform at the southern end.
- Coastal Flora and Fauna: Look for wallabies, sea eagles, and the vibrant orange banksias that bloom in winter.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 2–3 hours for the full return walk from Town Beach to Lighthouse Beach, including stops for photos and a swim. If you’re short on time, you can walk the most scenic section (from Town Beach to Tacking Point Lighthouse) in about 1 hour one way. Many visitors combine the walk with a morning coffee at a beachfront café in town, then tackle the trail before the midday heat.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Port Macquarie Town Centre: Explore the historic waterfront, boutique shops, and the Koala Hospital – just a short walk from the trailhead.
- Hastings River: Take a river cruise or kayak tour to see the area from the water.
- Sea Acres Rainforest Centre: A short drive away, this boardwalk through subtropical rainforest offers a completely different ecosystem to explore.
- North Brother Mountain: For a longer hike with sweeping views, this peak is about 20 minutes’ drive north.
