Bungonia State Conservation Area
Carved into the rugged Southern Highlands, Bungonia State Conservation Area is a dramatic landscape of plunging gorges, limestone caves and wild river valleys that feels a world away from the coast. This is one of New South Wales’ most spectacular wilderness areas, offering serious hiking, canyoning and caving for adventurous travellers, alongside more accessible lookouts that reward with breathtaking views.
Highlights & What to See
- Bungonia Lookout – An easy walk leads to this vertiginous viewpoint over the Shoalhaven River Gorge, 450 metres below – a classic photo stop.
- Adams Lookout – Another stunning panorama, this time over the Bungonia Creek valley and the patchwork of farmland beyond.
- Bungonia Caves – A network of limestone caves, including the impressive Grill Cave and the more challenging Texas Caves. Guided tours (book ahead) reveal stalactites, stalagmites and fossil deposits.
- Bungonia Creek Walking Track – A 10 km return hike that descends into the gorge, following the creek past swimming holes and rock pools – bring plenty of water.
- Canyoning and Abseiling – The area is a hotspot for adventure sports; several operators run trips into the slot canyons and waterfalls of the Shoalhaven.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least a full day to do justice to Bungonia – a morning walk to the lookouts and a short cave tour, then a picnic before tackling a longer gorge hike. Overnight camping in the conservation area (permits required) allows you to explore deeper canyons and catch sunrise over the escarpment. For a quick visit, two to three hours at the main lookouts and a cave tour is enough.
