Stretching along the far north coast of New South Wales, Bundjalung National Park is a wild and wonderful expanse of coastal heath, rainforest pockets, and pristine beaches. Named after the traditional custodians, the Bundjalung people, this park offers a genuine escape into nature, where you can swim in crystal-clear creeks, spot kangaroos at sunrise, and feel the ancient pulse of the land. It’s a must for travellers seeking solitude and raw coastal beauty.
Highlights & What to See
- Black Rocks – A striking headland of volcanic rock where waves crash dramatically; great for whale watching (June–November) and photography.
- Iluka Bluff Walk – A short, scenic walk to a lookout over the Clarence River mouth and the Pacific Ocean; keep an eye out for sea eagles.
- Gummi Garra Creek – A tranquil spot for a paddle or swim; the creek is lined with paperbarks and offers a peaceful picnic area.
- Bundjalung National Park Rainforest Walk – A 1.5 km loop through lush littoral rainforest, with towering figs and cabbage tree palms.
- Ten Mile Beach – A long, sweeping beach perfect for a solitary stroll, birdwatching, or a refreshing dip (be mindful of rips).
Suggested Time to Spend
Spend at least half a day to explore the park’s highlights, but a full day is ideal to soak in the atmosphere. Start with a morning walk on the Iluka Bluff, then head to Gummi Garra Creek for a swim and lunch. In the afternoon, explore the rainforest walk and finish with sunset at Black Rocks. If you’re camping, two nights allows for a relaxed pace and time to explore nearby Iluka Nature Reserve.
