Bonville Head Lighthouse
Perched on a rocky headland just south of Coffs Harbour, Bonville Head Lighthouse is a compact but characterful beacon that rewards visitors with sweeping coastal views and a dose of maritime history. Built in 1905, this whitewashed timber-and-iron tower stands only 10 metres tall, yet its setting above the turquoise Pacific makes it feel far grander. The short walk to the lighthouse is a delight, with the rumble of waves against the cliffs and the scent of saltbush in the air. It’s a perfect stop for self-drivers exploring the NSW mid-north coast, offering a quiet alternative to busier lookouts.
Highlights & What to See
- Coastal Walk: The 1.5-km return track from Bonville Head Reserve winds through coastal heath and delivers knockout views of the headland and distant Solitary Islands. Keep an eye out for migrating humpback whales (June–November) and pods of dolphins surfing the swells.
- Lighthouse & Signal Station: Though not open to the public, the lighthouse and its adjacent signal station (once used to report ship movements) are photogenic landmarks. Interpretive panels explain the site’s role in early 20th-century shipping.
- Bonville Head Reserve: A grassy picnic area with barbecues and benches makes an ideal spot for a seaside lunch. The reserve’s coastal banksias and pandanus palms attract rainbow lorikeets and king parrots.
- Fishing & Whale-Watching: The rocky platform below the lighthouse is a favoured fishing spot for locals. Bring binoculars for scanning the horizon – this headland is one of the region’s best vantage points for marine life.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 45 minutes to 1 hour here, which is enough to stroll the walking track, read the interpretive signs, and soak up the views. If you plan to picnic or fish, allow 1.5–2 hours. The site works well as a short detour on a coastal drive between Coffs Harbour and Sawtell, or as a leg-stretcher before continuing south to Port Macquarie.
