Waterfall Way is a spectacular 185-kilometre driving route that winds through the lush hinterland of the New South Wales Mid North Coast, connecting Coffs Harbour with the New England Tablelands. This scenic drive is a paradise for nature lovers, offering a string of breathtaking waterfalls, ancient rainforests, and national parks. As you navigate the winding roads, you'll be treated to ever-changing vistas of misty gorges, fern-filled gullies, and the occasional glimpse of the distant coast. It's a journey that rewards those who take their time, with plenty of opportunities to stop, stretch your legs, and immerse yourself in the region's stunning natural beauty.
Highlights & What to See
- Dangar Falls – A 30-metre cascade just north of Dorrigo, easily accessible via a short walk to a viewing platform. The adjacent swimming hole is perfect for a refreshing dip in summer.
- Dorrigo National Park – A World Heritage-listed Gondwana rainforest with the famous Skywalk, a raised walkway that takes you above the canopy for panoramic views. The Wonga Walk leads to Crystal Shower Falls, where you can walk behind the waterfall.
- Ebor Falls – A dramatic two-tiered waterfall plunging 100 metres into a deep gorge in Guy Fawkes River National Park. The viewing platforms offer excellent photo opportunities, especially after rain.
- New England National Park – Home to the towering Point Lookout (1564 metres), offering 360-degree views over the escarpment. The park's walking trails wind through ancient Antarctic beech forests and heathlands.
- Wollomombi Falls – At 220 metres, one of the highest waterfalls in Australia. The lookout provides a vertiginous view of the gorge, and the longer walk to the base is a challenging but rewarding hike.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least a full day to drive the entire route from Coffs Harbour to Armidale, stopping at key viewpoints and short walks. For a more immersive experience, allow two to three days to explore the national parks and do longer hikes. Break the journey with an overnight stay in Dorrigo or Ebor – both have charming pubs and cosy B&Bs. Early morning or late afternoon light is best for photography, and weekdays are quieter than weekends.
