Wingham Brush Nature Reserve is a pocket of ancient subtropical rainforest on the banks of the Manning River, just a short walk from the historic town of Wingham. This 10-hectare remnant is one of the finest examples of lowland rainforest on the NSW mid-north coast, with towering fig trees, giant stinging trees and a canopy alive with flying foxes at dusk. Walking the elevated boardwalk feels like stepping back in time — the air is cool and damp, and the birdlife is extraordinary. It’s a must-do for nature lovers and anyone looking for a serene break on a self-drive itinerary between Sydney and the north coast.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 1–2 hours to walk the boardwalk at a leisurely pace, lingering to read the interpretive signs and watch for wildlife. Combine this with a morning or afternoon in Wingham itself — grab a coffee at one of the historic cafés and browse the local shops. If you’re keen on the flying-fox exodus, time your visit for late afternoon and stay until sunset. The reserve is compact, so it works well as a half-day stop on a longer road trip.
