Wingham Brush Nature Reserve is a pocket of ancient subtropical rainforest on the banks of the Manning River, just a short walk from the historic town of Wingham. This 10-hectare remnant is one of the finest examples of lowland rainforest on the NSW mid-north coast, with towering fig trees, giant stinging trees and a canopy alive with flying foxes at dusk. Walking the elevated boardwalk feels like stepping back in time — the air is cool and damp, and the birdlife is extraordinary. It’s a must-do for nature lovers and anyone looking for a serene break on a self-drive itinerary between Sydney and the north coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Rainforest Boardwalk: A 1.2 km elevated loop that takes you through the heart of the reserve, past massive strangler figs and cabbage palms. The boardwalk is flat and accessible, making it easy to spot birds and the occasional water dragon.
- Grey-headed Flying-fox Colony: As dusk falls, thousands of flying foxes take to the sky — a spectacular natural show. The reserve is a vital roosting site, and interpretive signs explain their ecological importance.
- Historic Wingham: After your walk, explore the charming township with its well-preserved 19th-century buildings, antique shops and riverside cafés. The Wingham Museum is a gem for local history.
- Manning River: The reserve borders the river, where you can picnic, kayak or simply watch the water glide by. There’s a small beach and canoe launch point near the entrance.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours to walk the boardwalk at a leisurely pace, lingering to read the interpretive signs and watch for wildlife. Combine this with a morning or afternoon in Wingham itself — grab a coffee at one of the historic cafés and browse the local shops. If you’re keen on the flying-fox exodus, time your visit for late afternoon and stay until sunset. The reserve is compact, so it works well as a half-day stop on a longer road trip.
