Toowoon Bay is a serene crescent of golden sand on the NSW Central Coast, protected by a rocky headland that creates calm, crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and snorkelling. Unlike the more commercialised beaches further north, Toowoon Bay retains a laid-back, local feel, with a grassy foreshore park, a saltwater ocean pool, and a handful of excellent cafés just steps from the sand. It’s the kind of place where you can spend a morning floating in the gentle waves and an afternoon exploring rock pools and coastal walks without ever feeling rushed.
Highlights & What to See
- Toowoon Bay Beach – The main beach is a sheltered gem with fine sand and gentle surf, ideal for families and novice swimmers. The northern end has a small ocean pool carved into the rocks.
- Toowoon Bay Ocean Pool – A protected saltwater pool at the southern end, perfect for a safe dip when the surf is up; it’s a favourite with locals doing laps at sunrise.
- Coastal walk to The Entrance – A scenic 2 km path hugs the headland from Toowoon Bay to The Entrance, offering panoramic views over Tuggerah Lake and the Pacific Ocean. Look for whales during migration (June–July and September–November).
- Rock pools at low tide – The rocky platforms at the southern end of the beach reveal small pools teeming with starfish, crabs and anemones – a hit with kids and nature lovers.
- Grassy picnic area and playground – The park behind the beach has barbecues, tables and a shaded playground, making it an easy spot for a relaxed lunch.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find a half-day (3–4 hours) is enough to swim, explore the rock pools and walk to The Entrance and back. If you want to settle in with a book and lunch at a café, allow a full day. The beach is lovely at any time of day, but early morning offers the calmest water and a quieter atmosphere. Pair it with a morning at nearby Shelly Beach or an afternoon exploring the shops and waterfront at The Entrance.
