Scotts Head is a sleepy coastal hamlet on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, where the lush green hills roll right down to a dazzling stretch of white sand. This is the kind of place where the main street ends at the beach, and the only soundtrack is the crash of waves and the cry of sea eagles. It feels wonderfully off the radar, yet it's just a short detour from the Pacific Highway, making it an ideal stop for travellers seeking a genuine, uncrowded beach experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Scotts Head Beach: A sweeping crescent of sand that’s patrolled in summer and offers excellent swimming, surfing, and fishing. The southern end is a popular surf break, while the northern end is calmer for families.
- Scotts Head Headland: A short walk from the beach leads to a rocky headland with panoramic views up and down the coast. Look out for migrating whales (June–November) and pods of dolphins year-round.
- Gaagal Wanggaan (South Beach) National Park: Just south of town, this protected area encompasses stunning coastal heath, secluded beaches, and the culturally significant Gaagal Wanggaan lagoon. A must for nature lovers and birdwatchers.
- Hat Head National Park: A short drive north, this park features dramatic sea cliffs, coastal rainforest, and the historic Hat Head lighthouse. The walking tracks offer superb coastal scenery.
- Local seafood: The Scotts Head General Store and nearby cafes serve up fresh fish and chips, prawns, and oysters – perfect for a beachside picnic.
Suggested Time to Spend
Scotts Head is a perfect half-day stop or a relaxing overnight stay. If you’re passing through, allow 1–2 hours to stretch your legs on the beach and walk the headland. To truly unwind, spend a full day here: morning swim, lunch at the general store, an afternoon exploring Gaagal Wanggaan National Park, and sunset from the headland. For a slower pace, consider staying a couple of nights to soak up the coastal serenity and explore the nearby national parks.
