Rising abruptly from the lowlands near Laurieton, North Brother Mountain is a striking peak within the Camden Haven region. Part of the Broken Head Nature Reserve, this 485-metre summit offers sweeping panoramic views of the coastline, the Camden Haven River system, and the surrounding national parks. It’s a favourite among hikers and nature lovers seeking a rewarding climb without the crowds of bigger-name peaks.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Lookout: The 360-degree view from the top is the main draw – on a clear day you can see from Port Macquarie to Seal Rocks, and inland to the escarpment of the Great Dividing Range.
- North Brother Mountain Walking Track: A steep but well-maintained 4.5 km return hike through lush rainforest and eucalypt forest. Allow about 2–3 hours; the trail is rocky in parts, so sturdy shoes are a must.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for lyrebirds, wallabies, and goannas along the trail. The reserve is also home to a variety of birdlife, making it a peaceful spot for birdwatching.
- Aboriginal Heritage: The mountain holds cultural significance for the local Birpai people – respect the site and take time to learn about its traditional importance at the interpretive signs near the base.
- Photography Opportunities: The summit is especially photogenic at sunrise or late afternoon when the light casts long shadows across the valley and ocean.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day (3–4 hours) including the hike and time at the summit. If you’re keen on photography or a relaxed picnic, add another hour. The hike is best tackled in the morning to avoid the midday heat and for the clearest views. It’s a great stop on a road trip between Sydney and Byron Bay, or as a day trip from Port Macquarie or Laurieton.
