New England National Park is a rugged wilderness of ancient rainforests, dramatic escarpments, and sweeping views over the Great Dividing Range. This World Heritage-listed park, part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, offers a true escape into nature, with cool temperate air, mossy forests, and the haunting calls of lyrebirds. Perfect for hikers and nature lovers, it’s a highlight of any self-drive itinerary through northern New South Wales.
Highlights & What to See
- Point Lookout – The park’s iconic viewpoint, perched at 1564 metres, offering panoramic views over the escarpment and, on clear days, all the way to the coast. Sunrise here is unforgettable.
- Wrights Lookout Walk – A short, family-friendly trail through Antarctic beech forest to a dramatic cliff-edge lookout. The moss-draped trees and ferns feel prehistoric.
- Lyrebird Track – A longer walk (4 km return) through cool temperate rainforest, where you’re almost guaranteed to hear (and maybe see) superb lyrebirds mimicking other birds.
- Grassy Creek Track – A challenging 10 km return hike descending into the valley, passing ancient tree ferns and cascading creeks. Allow a full day.
- Snow gums and wildflowers – In winter, snow dusts the high-altitude snow gums; spring brings a riot of wildflowers, including boronias and waratahs.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day driving the scenic loop from the Waterfall Way entrance, stopping at Point Lookout and doing one or two short walks. If you’re keen on a longer hike like Grassy Creek Track, plan an overnight stay at the basic camping ground near the park entrance. For a relaxed pace, two days allows you to explore the escarpment trails and soak in the silence of the rainforest.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Dorrigo National Park – Just 30 minutes south, with its famous Skywalk and lush rainforest walks, another Gondwana gem easily combined on a day trip.
- Ebor – A tiny village with the Ebor Falls (a stunning waterfall on the Guy Fawkes River) and a great pub for lunch.
- Armidale – The nearest city (about 1 hour west), known for its New England Regional Art Museum, historic homesteads, and autumn colours.
- Waterfall Way – The scenic drive itself, linking several national parks and waterfalls, is a must-do for road-trippers.
