Nambucca Heads is a laid-back coastal town on the Mid North Coast of NSW, where the Nambucca River meets the sea. It's a classic beachside escape with a strong surf culture, a charming riverfront, and a community that wears its heart on its sleeve — literally, in the form of the famous V-Wall. This is a place for long walks on wild beaches, paddling in calm river bends, and soaking up unpretentious coastal vibes.
Highlights & What to See
- V-Wall: A breakwall covered in thousands of colourful paintings, messages, and art created by visitors and locals. A must-see for its ever-evolving, quirky gallery.
- Beaches: Main Beach is patrolled and great for swimming; Shelly Beach and Rotary Park are perfect for calm paddling. For surf, head to the northern end of Main Beach or to nearby Scotts Head.
- Captain Cook Lookout: Offers sweeping views of the coastline, from the Nambucca River mouth to the distant mountains. Best at sunset.
- Nambucca River: Hire a kayak or stand-up paddleboard to explore the mangrove-lined waterways; keep an eye out for pelicans and stingrays.
- Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club: A surprisingly scenic 18-hole course with river views; even non-golfers can enjoy the club’s bistro and cold beer.
Suggested Time to Spend
For a relaxed visit, allow at least a full day to explore the beaches, the V-Wall, and a river paddle. If you’re passing through on a coastal road trip, a half-day stop is enough to see the V-Wall and take in the lookout. Many travellers use Nambucca Heads as a laid-back overnight stop between Sydney and Byron Bay.
