Mount Sugarloaf

Rising 412 metres above the Lake Macquarie region, Mount Sugarloaf offers some of the most expansive views along the NSW coast. This dormant volcanic plug, part of the Sugarloaf Range, is a favourite for hikers and sunset chasers. The summit rewards you with a 360-degree panorama that stretches from the glittering waters of Lake Macquarie to the distant skyscrapers of Newcastle and, on clear days, the jagged outline of the Barrington Tops. It’s a short but steep climb, and the sense of isolation atop this rocky outcrop makes it feel far removed from the suburban sprawl below.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1.5–2 hours at Mount Sugarloaf, including the walk and time soaking in the views at the top. If you’re keen on photography or a relaxed picnic, budget an extra hour. The walk is best done in the late afternoon to catch the sunset, but arrive at least 90 minutes before dusk to enjoy the full experience. You can easily combine this with a morning at Lake Macquarie or a visit to a nearby winery in the Hunter Valley.
