Krambach is a sleepy hamlet in the Wallis Lake region of the NSW Mid North Coast, known for its lush dairy country and the meandering Wallamba River. It's a place to slow down, breathe deeply, and experience rural Australian life at its most authentic. The surrounding landscape – rolling green hills dotted with cattle, stands of eucalypts, and the dark tannic waters of the river – feels a world away from the coast, yet it's only a short drive from the popular holiday towns of Forster and Tuncurry.
Highlights & What to See
- Wallamba River – The river is the heart of Krambach. Canoe or kayak on its peaceful waters, fish for bass and bream, or simply find a shady spot on the bank for a picnic. The river is also a popular spot for water-skiing.
- Booral Reserve – A short drive north, this reserve offers a lovely walking track along the river through paperbark forest and open paddocks. It's a great spot for birdwatching, with kingfishers, herons and white-bellied sea eagles often seen.
- Dairy farms and local produce – The area is prime dairy country. Visit a local farm gate for fresh milk, cheese or seasonal fruit. The Krambach Hall sometimes hosts community markets – check local notices.
- Myall Lakes National Park – A short drive east, this vast wilderness of lakes, forests and beaches is perfect for bushwalking, canoeing and spotting goannas and wallabies. The park's Bombah Point ferry is a fun detour.
- Nabiac – This nearby village has a quirky aviation museum and a great general store with excellent pies and coffee – a welcome pit stop on the way to or from the coast.
Suggested Time to Spend
Krambach itself is tiny – you can see it in an hour. But its appeal lies in the surrounding countryside and river. Plan for a half-day if you want to paddle or fish; a full day to combine a river activity with a visit to Booral Reserve or Nabiac. Most travellers use Krambach as a peaceful detour en route between the Pacific Highway and the Forster/Tuncurry coast, or as a base for exploring the Wallis Lake and Myall Lakes region over a long weekend.
