Hanging Rock

Hanging Rock, a dramatic volcanic outcrop rising from the bushland west of Lake Macquarie, offers one of the region's most rewarding short walks. The rock platform provides sweeping views over the lake, the Pacific Ocean, and the surrounding national parks. This is a place where geology and Indigenous history converge – the rock is a significant site for the Awabakal people, and the walk passes through beautiful spotted gum forest.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow about 1–1.5 hours for the return walk and time to soak in the views. The track is 1.4 km return with a moderate incline, so it's a perfect morning or late-afternoon outing. If you're planning to explore more of the Watagan Mountains, combine it with a half-day visit to nearby walking trails or waterfalls.
