Plunging 160 metres into a fern-cloaked gorge, Ellenborough Falls is one of Australia’s tallest single-drop waterfalls. Located in the Bulga Plateau region, this natural spectacle offers a dramatic contrast to the coastal calm of nearby Lake Macquarie. The walk to the viewing platforms is short but steep, rewarding you with misty panoramas and the thunder of falling water.
Highlights & What to See
- Main Lookout – The upper viewing platform delivers a head-on perspective of the falls, especially powerful after rain. Early morning light often creates rainbows in the spray.
- Ridge Walk – A 1.5 km loop trail through subtropical rainforest leads to the base of the falls. Look for lyrebirds and ancient tree ferns along the way.
- Ellenborough River – Below the falls, the river forms cool, rocky pools – ideal for a refreshing dip on a hot day.
- Picnic Area – Sheltered tables near the carpark make for a scenic lunch spot. Bring your own supplies as there are no cafes nearby.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here, including the short walk and time at the lookouts. If you plan to hike the Ridge Walk or simply soak up the atmosphere, allow half a day. Combine with a stop in the historic village of Ellenborough for a coffee before heading back.
