Perched on a ridge between the Watagan Mountains and the coast, Copeland Tops State Conservation Area is a hidden gem for hikers and nature lovers. This 1,200-hectare reserve protects a mosaic of dry eucalypt forest, sandstone outcrops, and pockets of subtropical rainforest. The walking trails offer sweeping views over Lake Macquarie and the Pacific Ocean, while the park's namesake 'tops' provide a sense of wild isolation just 30 minutes from Newcastle.

Suggested Time to Spend

Half a day is ideal for exploring the main walking tracks and enjoying a picnic at one of the shaded tables near the entrance. If you're keen to tackle the full Purgatory Creek circuit and linger at the lookout, allow 3–4 hours.
