Bouddi National Park is a coastal gem on the Central Coast of NSW, where lush rainforest meets dramatic sea cliffs and secluded beaches. Just a short drive north of Sydney, this park offers a wild, untamed slice of nature that feels a world away from the city. The park is a haven for bushwalkers, birdwatchers, and anyone craving a dose of coastal solitude. With its Aboriginal heritage and stunning geology, Bouddi is a place where you can truly disconnect and immerse yourself in the raw beauty of the Australian coastline.
Highlights & What to See
- Bouddi Coastal Walk: This 8.5 km one-way track from Putty Beach to MacMasters Beach is the park's showpiece. It winds through coastal heath and scribbly gum forests, with jaw-dropping views of the ocean and the distant Hawkesbury River. Keep an eye out for whales during migration season (June–July and September–November).
- Maitland Bay: A secluded beach accessible via a short but steep walk from the car park. The bay is named after the steamer Maitland, wrecked here in 1898; you can still see remnants of the boiler at low tide. It's a perfect spot for a picnic and a swim, but beware of rips.
- Gerrin Point Lookout: A short detour from the coastal walk offers panoramic views from the highest point in the park. On a clear day, you can see from Barrenjoey Head to Norah Head.
- Aboriginal Sites: The park contains several significant Aboriginal sites, including midden deposits and rock engravings. The Bouddi Peninsula has been home to the Darkinjung and Guringai people for thousands of years.
- Birdwatching: Bouddi is a birdwatcher's paradise, with species like the powerful owl, sooty oystercatcher, and white-bellied sea eagle. The heathlands are particularly good for honeyeaters and robins.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring Bouddi. Arrive early to tackle the Coastal Walk (allow 3–4 hours one way, or 5–6 hours return with breaks). If you only have a half-day, focus on the section from Putty Beach to Maitland Bay and back, which takes about 2–3 hours. For a more leisurely visit, combine a short walk with a swim at one of the beaches and a picnic at the park's picnic areas. Overnight camping is available at Putty Beach Campground, which is a great way to experience sunset and sunrise over the ocean.
