Yarrawonga is a sleepy, sunbaked hamlet in the lower Hunter Valley, where the landscape shifts from rolling vineyards to wide-open cattle country. With its handful of heritage buildings, a classic country pub, and the mighty Murray River lapping at its edge, this is a place to slow down and soak up the unhurried rhythms of rural New South Wales. It's less about ticking sights off a list and more about sinking into a deckchair with a cold drink as the river glides by.
Highlights & What to See
- Murray River foreshore: The main draw is the big, brown river itself. Wander the grassy riverfront reserve, launch a kayak, or cast a line for Murray cod. In summer, locals cool off at the Yarrawonga Weir swimming area.
- Yarrawonga Weir: A short drive from town, this impressive concrete structure spans the Murray. Walk across the top for views up and down the river, and spot pelicans and cormorants sunning themselves on the spillway.
- Belmore Street heritage walk: The main street retains a handful of handsome 19th-century buildings, including the grand Yarrawonga Post Office (now a museum) and the Royal Hotel, a classic country pub with a wraparound verandah.
- Lake Mulwala: Just across the bridge in Victoria, this vast artificial lake (created by the weir) is perfect for water-skiing, sailing, and paddleboarding. The lake is also famous for its drowned forest – ghostly tree trunks that emerge from the water, making for eerie, beautiful photos at sunset.
- Yarrawonga Mulwala Pioneer Museum: Housed in the old post office, this small museum is packed with local memorabilia – from shearing tools to vintage clothing – that tells the story of the district's agricultural and riverboat past.
Suggested Time to Spend
Yarrawonga is a classic overnight stop – arrive in the afternoon, enjoy a riverside stroll and a pub dinner, and move on the next morning. If you're keen on water sports or fishing, two nights allow a full day on the lake. The town is small enough that you can see its main sights in a couple of hours, but the real pleasure is in doing very little by the river.
