Winton Wetlands is a sprawling, rewilded landscape in the heart of Victoria's high country, offering a raw, immersive nature experience that feels a world away from the coast. This 8,750-hectare site, once a man-made reservoir, is now Australia’s largest wetland restoration project. It’s a haven for birdlife, with over 200 species recorded, and a place where you can truly disconnect and explore on foot, bike, or kayak. For international travellers, it’s a chance to see a unique environmental success story and experience the Australian bush at its most authentic.
Highlights & What to See
- Birdwatching at the Mokoan Ponds – Bring binoculars to spot migratory waders, swans, and the rare brolga. The bird hide on the Wetlands Loop Trail offers prime viewing.
- Cycling the Winton Wetlands Trail – A 28 km loop that takes you through open woodlands, across historic dam walls, and past remnant red gums. E-bikes available for hire at the visitor centre.
- Kayaking on Lake Mokoan – Paddle through submerged tree skeletons and flooded timber – an eerie, beautiful landscape that changes with the light. Launch from the boat ramp near the Wetlands Discovery Centre.
- Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Walk – Join a guided tour to learn about the traditional owners, the Yorta Yorta people, and see scar trees, middens, and stone tools scattered across the site.
- Stargazing at the Dark Sky Site – Winton Wetlands is one of Victoria’s best dark-sky locations. On clear nights, the Milky Way arches overhead with zero light pollution.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring the wetlands – cycle the main loop (allow 2–3 hours), then paddle or walk a shorter trail. If you’re keen on birdwatching or photography, consider an overnight stay at the on-site eco-cabins or the nearby town of Benalla. A half-day is enough for a quick drive-through and a walk to the bird hide, but you’ll miss the magic of sunrise or sunset when the wetland comes alive.
