Wingham Brush Nature Reserve is a pocket of ancient subtropical rainforest on the banks of the Manning River, a short stroll from the historic town of Wingham. This 8-hectare reserve is a living museum of towering figs, cabbage tree palms and giant stinging trees, with a raised boardwalk that lets you wander through the canopy without disturbing the delicate ecosystem. It’s a serene, bird-filled escape that feels a world away from the coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Boardwalk Loop – A 500-metre elevated walkway weaves through the rainforest, offering close-up views of strangler figs, epiphytes and the enormous buttress roots of ancient trees. Listen for the whip-crack call of the eastern whipbird.
- Flying Fox Colony – At dusk, thousands of grey-headed flying foxes take to the sky in a spectacular exodus. The reserve is one of the largest maternity camps for this vulnerable species.
- Manning River Views – The boardwalk ends at a river lookout where you can spot turtles and water dragons basking on logs. It’s also a prime spot for a quiet picnic.
- Wingham Town – After your walk, explore the heritage-listed main street of Wingham, with its art deco buildings, antique shops and the famous Wingham Memorial Town Hall.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30–45 minutes for the boardwalk loop, plus extra time if you plan to linger at the river lookout or explore Wingham’s cafes. The reserve is best visited in the morning or late afternoon when the light filters through the canopy and bird activity is highest. If you’re keen to see the flying foxes depart, arrive about 30 minutes before sunset.
