Wilsons Promontory National Park, affectionately known as ‘The Prom’ by locals, is Victoria’s most beloved coastal wilderness. This granite peninsula juts into Bass Strait, fringed with squeaky-white beaches, granite boulders, and lush forests. It’s a haven for hikers, wildlife watchers, and anyone craving raw, unspoiled nature.
Highlights & What to See
- Squeaky Beach: The name says it all—walk on the quartz sand and hear it ‘squeak’. Crystal-clear turquoise water and huge granite boulders make it a perfect spot for a picnic or a swim.
- Mount Oberon Summit: A relatively short but steep 3.4 km return hike rewards you with 360-degree views of the park, coastline, and offshore islands. Go at sunset for the best light.
- Tidal River: The main hub of the park, with camping, a general store, and access to many trails. It’s also a great place to spot wombats grazing at dusk.
- Wildlife Encounters: Kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, and emus are common. Keep an eye out for wombats, especially around Tidal River and the Telegraph Track.
- Lilly Pilly Gully Nature Walk: A gentle 1.5 km loop through lush rainforest, with ferns, tall eucalypts, and the chance to see lyrebirds.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly experience The Prom, dedicate at least two to three days. A day trip is possible if you’re short on time—drive straight to Tidal River, hike Mount Oberon, and take a dip at Squeaky Beach. But with overnight stays, you can tackle longer hikes like the Prom Summit Walk (22 km return) or the overnight hike to Refuge Cove. Camping at Tidal River is popular, so book well in advance.
