Perched on a dramatic headland overlooking the Tasman Sea, Tathra is a sleepy coastal gem on the NSW Sapphire Coast. Its name comes from an Aboriginal word meaning 'beautiful place' – and it lives up to it. With a historic timber wharf, wild beaches and a laidback village atmosphere, Tathra feels like a secret hideaway for those who crave untamed nature and quiet seaside days.
Highlights & What to See
- Tathra Wharf – Australia's last remaining working timber wharf, jutting 180 metres into the ocean. It's perfect for a sunset stroll, fishing or spotting whales (May–November). The adjacent museum tells the story of the coastal shipping era.
- Tathra Beach – A sweeping, patrolled beach with gentle waves, ideal for swimming, surfing and long walks. The northern end is dog-friendly.
- Bournda National Park – Just south of town, this park protects heath-clad cliffs, secluded coves and the stunning Bournda Lagoon. The Kangarutha walking track offers epic coastal views.
- Mimosa Rocks National Park – A wilder, less-visited park north of Tathra, with sea caves, blowholes and Aboriginal middens. The walk to Wajurda Point is a must.
- Tathra Beachside Holiday Park – Even if you're not staying, the café here is a local favourite for coffee and fish and chips on the grass.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days gives you time to explore the wharf and beaches, tackle a coastal walk in Bournda National Park, and enjoy the town's relaxed rhythm. If you're self-driving the Sapphire Coast, Tathra makes a perfect overnight stop between Merimbula and Bermagui. Add an extra day to paddle on the calm Bega River or kayak to the wharf.
