Tarwin Lower is a tiny rural hamlet on Victoria's Bass Coast, where the Tarwin River meets the sea. It's a quiet, off-the-radar spot that rewards travellers with wild coastal scenery, excellent fishing, and a genuine sense of isolation. The surrounding landscape is a mix of rolling farmland, dense coastal scrub, and long sandy beaches that stretch for miles. This is a place to slow down, breathe in the salt air, and watch the tide roll in.
Highlights & What to See
- Tarwin River Mouth – Where the river meets the ocean, this is a prime spot for fishing (salmon, mullet, flathead) and birdwatching. The shifting sandbars create a dynamic landscape that changes with every tide.
- Bunurong Marine National Park – Just south, this protected area offers rockpooling, snorkelling, and dramatic cliff-top walks. Keep an eye out for the Bunurong Aboriginal cultural sites along the coast.
- Cape Liptrap Coastal Park – A wild, windswept park with walking trails that lead to stunning coastal lookouts. The lighthouse at Cape Liptrap is a classic photo op, and in spring the heathlands burst with wildflowers.
- Walkerville – A tiny settlement with a general store and a sheltered beach perfect for kayaking. The nearby Walkerville Foreshore Reserve has picnic tables and a boat ramp.
- Tarwin Lower General Store – The heart of the village, serving excellent coffee, homemade pies, and friendly local advice. Grab supplies here before heading to the beach.
Suggested Time to Spend
Tarwin Lower is best as a half-day stop or an overnight stay if you want to explore the coastal parks thoroughly. Most visitors spend 2–3 hours fishing or walking the beaches, then combine it with a visit to nearby Cape Liptrap or Venus Bay. If you're self-driving, consider arriving in the late afternoon to catch the sunset over the river mouth – it's a magical sight.
