Perched on a lush plateau inland from the Gold Coast, Tamborine Mountain offers a cool, green escape with sweeping views, ancient rainforest, and a thriving arts-and-food scene. This is the Scenic Rim's most accessible mountain retreat, where you can wander through glow-worm grottos, sip boutique wines, and browse galleries in a village that feels a world away from the coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk – Walk among the canopy on a series of suspended bridges and a 40-metre observation tower; the bird's-eye views of the gorge are unforgettable.
- Glow Worm Caves – Descend into man-made caves at Cedar Creek Estate to see thousands of bioluminescent glow-worms; a guided tour reveals the science and magic.
- Gallery Walk – This one-kilometre stretch of Main Western Road is lined with art galleries, craft workshops, fudge shops, and cafés. Don't miss the local cheese and handmade chocolates.
- Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens – A free, beautifully maintained garden with themed sections, a Japanese garden, and a lake. Perfect for a picnic.
- Wine & Distillery Trail – The mountain is home to several cellar doors and a distillery. Try the award-winning wines at Witches Falls Winery or the gin at Tamborine Mountain Distillery.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can see the main sights in a day, but an overnight stay lets you soak up the mountain's evening calm. Start early with the Skywalk and glow-worm tour, spend the afternoon exploring Gallery Walk and a winery, then overnight in a B&B or eco-lodge. If you're short on time, a full day from the Gold Coast or Brisbane is doable – just prioritise the Skywalk and one winery.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Mount Tamborine (the neighbouring village) – A quieter alternative with more bushwalking trails and the scenic Curtis Falls.
- Canungra – A historic town at the foot of the mountain, known for its military history and the O'Reilly's Vineyard.
- Lamington National Park – About 30 minutes south, offering world-class hiking in ancient Gondwana rainforest, including the famous Border Track.
- Gold Coast Hinterland – The whole Scenic Rim region is a paradise for nature lovers; combine Tamborine with Springbrook National Park or Natural Bridge.
- Binna Burra – A gateway to Lamington National Park with spectacular lookouts and the historic Binna Burra Lodge.
