Stretching from Manly to Palm Beach, the Sydney Northern Beaches Coastal Walk is a stunning 36-kilometer trail that showcases the raw beauty of Sydney’s coastline. This multi-day trek takes you past golden sands, dramatic headlands, and lush national parks, with the Pacific Ocean as your constant companion. It’s a quintessential Australian experience, blending world-class surf beaches, Aboriginal heritage, and laid-back beachside cafes. Whether you tackle the full walk or choose shorter sections, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views and a genuine sense of coastal escape.
Highlights & What to See
- Manly to Shelly Beach – Start with the iconic Manly Scenic Walkway, passing through fairy penguin colonies and the calm waters of Shelly Beach, perfect for a morning swim.
- North Head – Detour into Sydney Harbour National Park for panoramic views of the city skyline, historic gun emplacements, and whale-watching lookouts (May–November).
- Dee Why Headland – A dramatic cliff-top path with wildflowers in spring and sweeping views of the long, patrolled Dee Why Beach below.
- Narrabeen Lagoon – A peaceful 9.2-kilometer circuit around the lagoon, ideal for birdwatching and spotting sea eagles, with boardwalks and picnic spots.
- Curl Curl to Freshwater – This section offers rugged coastal heath, rock platforms with tidal pools, and the chance to see surfers riding the famous waves at Freshwater Beach.
- Palm Beach to Barrenjoey Head – End at the northern tip with a climb to Barrenjoey Lighthouse for 360-degree views of Pittwater, the Central Coast, and Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park.
Suggested Time to Spend
For the full 36-kilometer walk, plan 3–4 days to enjoy it at a relaxed pace, with overnight stops at beachside accommodation in Manly, Dee Why, and Palm Beach. If you’re short on time, pick a 5–10 kilometer section for a half-day hike; the Manly to Spit Bridge (10 km) or Palm Beach to Whale Beach (6 km) are excellent options. Allow 4–6 hours for a one-way section, factoring in time for swims, coffee breaks, and photo stops. Most walkers go north to south (Palm Beach to Manly) to keep the sun at their back.
