Stretching from the harbour’s edge to the Tasman Sea, Sydney’s Eastern Beaches are a sun-bleached ribbon of golden sand, rugged cliffs, and laid-back coastal villages. This is where Sydneysiders come to surf, swim, and soak up the quintessential beach lifestyle, all within easy reach of the city centre. The Bondi-to-Coogee coastal walk is the star attraction, but each beach has its own character, from the bohemian buzz of Bronte to the family-friendly calm of Clovelly. Expect epic ocean pools, headland lookouts, and a thriving café scene that turns breakfast into a daily ritual.
Highlights & What to See
- Bondi Beach – Australia’s most iconic beach, with a sweeping crescent of sand, legendary surf, and the famous Bondi Icebergs ocean pool. Join the Bondi-to-Coogee coastal walk for breathtaking clifftop views.
- Bronte Beach – A smaller, more relaxed sibling to Bondi, with a family-friendly rock pool and a grassy park perfect for picnics. The Bronte Baths are one of Sydney’s best ocean pools.
- Tamarama Beach – A pint-sized but powerful surf beach known as ‘Glamarama’ for its beautiful crowd and strong rips. Best for watching surfers from the sand.
- Coogee Beach – A vibrant beach with a protected bay, a long ocean pool, and a lively promenade lined with cafés and pubs. The Coogee Pavilion is a must for a post-swim drink.
- Clovelly Beach – A narrow, sheltered bay ideal for swimming and snorkelling, thanks to its calm waters and concrete sea wall. The nearby Gordons Bay is a popular dive site.
- Waverley Cemetery – Perched on the clifftops between Bronte and Coogee, this historic cemetery offers stunning ocean views and a fascinating glimpse into Sydney’s past.
- Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk – A 6 km walk that weaves past all the above beaches, with jaw-dropping vistas, public art, and plenty of spots to stop for a coffee or a swim.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can easily spend a full day exploring the Eastern Beaches, but to truly soak up the vibe, consider two days: one dedicated to Bondi and the coastal walk, and another for lounging at Coogee or Bronte and exploring the local cafés. If you’re short on time, a half-day can cover the Bondi-to-Coogee walk with a swim at Bondi, but you’ll miss the more relaxed pace of the other beaches. For a deeper dive, add an extra day to surf at Bondi or snorkel at Clovelly.
