South West Rocks is a laid-back coastal town on the Mid North Coast of NSW, where the wild Tasman Sea meets the mouth of the Macleay River. It’s a place of dramatic headlands, long sandy beaches, and a surprising dose of convict history. For travellers, it offers a perfect blend of nature, marine life, and genuine Aussie beach culture without the crowds of more famous spots.
Highlights & What to See
- Trial Bay Gaol – A hauntingly beautiful 19th-century prison perched on a headland, with sweeping ocean views. The museum inside tells stories of its inmates and the internment of German prisoners during WWI.
- Little Bay & Horseshore Bay – Protected swimming beaches with crystal-clear water, ideal for families and snorkelling. The calm waters at Horseshore are a favourite for kayaking and paddleboarding.
- Fish Rock Cave – One of Australia’s best dive and snorkel sites. This underwater cave system is home to grey nurse sharks, rays, and colourful fish. If you don’t dive, a glass-bottom boat tour reveals the magic from above.
- Smoky Cape Lighthouse – A short walk from the car park leads to this working lighthouse with panoramic coastal views. Look for whales during migration season (June–November).
- Macleay River – Explore the river by kayak or stand-up paddleboard, spotting ospreys and pelicans. The riverbanks are dotted with mangroves and secluded sandbars.
- South West Rocks Country Club – A friendly golf course with views of the river and ocean, open to visitors.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal to experience the main attractions at a relaxed pace. Spend the first day exploring Trial Bay Gaol and the beaches, then dedicate a morning to a dive or snorkel at Fish Rock Cave. On the final day, take a coastal walk or kayak the river before heading off. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Port Macquarie is possible but you’ll miss the sunset over the headlands.
