Soldiers Beach is a long, patrolled stretch of golden sand on the Central Coast, just south of the Hunter Valley wine region. Backed by low dunes and a grassy reserve, it offers reliable surf breaks and a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. The beach takes its name from a historic army camp that once occupied the headland, but today it’s all about sun, sand, and swimming.
Highlights & What to See
- Surfing and swimming: The beach has a permanent lifeguard service in summer and consistent waves that suit intermediate surfers. The northern end is generally calmer for paddling.
- Norah Head Lighthouse: A short walk north along the coast leads to this iconic 1903 lighthouse. Climb to the top for panoramic views and learn about maritime history at the museum.
- Coastal walk: The Soldiers Beach to Norah Head walk follows the cliff tops, with wildflowers in spring and regular whale sightings from June to November.
- Rockpool at low tide: At the southern end of the beach, exposed rock platforms create natural pools perfect for kids to explore.
- Lake Munmorah: Just inland, this large lake is popular for kayaking, fishing, and birdwatching, with several picnic spots along its shores.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day at Soldiers Beach – enough for a swim, a walk to the lighthouse, and a picnic on the grass. If you’re keen on surfing or exploring the longer coastal track, plan for a full day. The beach is also an easy stop on a drive between Sydney and the Hunter Valley, so you can break your journey here for a couple of hours.
