Hidden deep in the Barrington Tops National Park, Rawson Falls is a breathtaking cascade that plunges 30 metres into a mossy amphitheatre of ancient Antarctic beech and rainforest. The journey to the falls is as rewarding as the destination, winding through lush temperate jungle alive with lyrebirds and the constant murmur of the Williams River. This is a place for serious nature lovers — the track is unsealed and requires a high-clearance 4WD, but the reward is one of the most pristine and private swimming holes in the Hunter Valley region. Pack a picnic and prepare for a day of wild immersion.
Highlights & What to See
- The Falls Themselves: A 30-metre drop into a deep, emerald pool perfect for a refreshing dip on a warm day. The spray keeps the surrounding rocks slick with ferns and orchids.
- Rainforest Walk: The short trail to the falls passes through some of the best-preserved Gondwana rainforest in NSW, with towering sassafras and tree ferns creating a cathedral-like canopy.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for superb lyrebirds scratching in the leaf litter, as well as red-necked wallabies and the occasional platypus in the river pools downstream.
- Photography at Golden Hour: Early morning or late afternoon light filters through the canopy, casting dappled light on the falls and creating magical photo opportunities.
- Nearby Lookouts: Combine your visit with a stop at Careys Peak Lookout for panoramic views over the Barrington Tops plateau and the distant coast.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least half a day, including the drive from the Hunter Valley floor. The walk from the car park is only about 20 minutes each way, but you'll want to linger for a swim, a picnic and plenty of photography. If you're a keen bushwalker, add another hour to explore the connecting trails along the Williams River. Best visited between November and April when the water flow is strong and the weather is warm, though autumn offers stunning foliage colour.
