Stretching roughly nine kilometres between the town beach and Lighthouse Beach, the Port Macquarie Coastal Walk is a stunning showcase of the region's dramatic shoreline. This easy-to-moderate trail hugs cliffs, dips into coves, and passes through pockets of coastal heath, offering ever-changing views of the Tasman Sea. It's a perfect way to experience the area's natural beauty, spot whales during migration season (May–November), and discover secluded beaches that feel a world away from the town centre.
Highlights & What to See
- Tacking Point Lighthouse: Australia's oldest surviving lighthouse (built 1879), perched on a headland with panoramic ocean views and excellent whale-watching vantage points.
- Shelly Beach: A sheltered cove ideal for a swim or snorkel, with calm waters and a popular rock pool at low tide.
- Miners Beach: A clothing-optional beach (the only legal one in the region) backed by low dunes and coastal scrub.
- Lighthouse Beach: The southern terminus, a long stretch of sand popular with surfers and dog walkers (dogs allowed on leash).
- Sea Acres Rainforest Centre: A short detour inland leads to a boardwalk through a remnant coastal rainforest, rich with birdlife and towering palms.
- Flagstaff Hill: A historic headland with a memorial and interpretive signs about the area's Indigenous and colonial past.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least three to four hours for the full one-way walk (one way is about 9 km, taking 2.5–3 hours at a steady pace). Most walkers start at the Town Beach end and finish at Lighthouse Beach, then catch a local bus or arrange a pickup back. If you prefer a shorter outing, the stretch from Tacking Point Lighthouse to Shelly Beach is a lovely 2 km loop that can be done in under an hour. Sunrise or late afternoon offers the best light and fewer crowds.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
