Perched on a dramatic headland just south of Port Macquarie, Tacking Point Lighthouse is one of Australia’s oldest surviving lighthouses, dating from 1879. This compact, whitewashed beacon offers sweeping coastal views over the Tasman Sea and is the perfect spot for whale watching (May–November) and sunrise photography. The surrounding headland is part of a coastal reserve with walking trails, picnic spots, and a wild, windswept beauty that feels a world away from the nearby town.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 1–2 hours to fully appreciate the headland, take photos, and do the short walk to the viewing platform. If you plan to do the longer coastal walk to Lighthouse Beach or continue to Port Macquarie’s town centre, budget a half-day. Sunrise and late afternoon offer the best light and fewer crowds.
