Perisher is Australia's largest ski resort, sprawling across four interconnected villages – Perisher Valley, Blue Cow, Smiggin Holes, and Guthega – in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales. With reliable snow, a vast network of trails for all abilities, and a lively après-ski scene, it's a mecca for winter sports enthusiasts. In summer, the alpine landscape transforms into a haven for hiking, mountain biking, and wildflower spotting.
Highlights & What to See
- Skiing & Snowboarding: Carve down over 1,200 hectares of terrain, from gentle beginner slopes at Smiggin Holes to challenging black runs like the Eyre T-bar at Blue Cow. The resort boasts 47 lifts, including the eight-seat Ridge Quad Express.
- Perisher Valley: The main hub with ski school, rental shops, and a buzzing village atmosphere. Don't miss the scenic Kosciuszko Express chairlift for panoramic views of the Main Range.
- Blue Cow: Accessible via the Skitube Alpine Railway, this area offers high-altitude runs and the famous 'Front Valley' – a wide, sun-drenched slope perfect for intermediates. The summit provides a 360-degree view of the national park.
- Guthega: A quieter, more advanced area with steep chutes and glades, ideal for experienced skiers seeking powder stashes. It also has a charming historic lodge.
- Cross-Country Skiing: Explore groomed trails through snow-gum forests and open plains, especially around Smiggin Holes and the Nordic Shelter. The resort is a gateway to the vast Kosciuszko National Park.
- Summer Activities: Hike to Mount Kosciuszko, Australia's highest peak, or cycle the Thredbo Valley Track. Wildflowers bloom in January, painting the meadows with billy buttons and snow daisies.
Suggested Time to Spend
For a comprehensive ski trip, plan at least three to four days to explore all four resort areas and enjoy the après-ski. A long weekend (Friday to Monday) works well for a taster, but a full week allows you to tackle different terrain and take a day for cross-country or a snowshoe tour. In summer, two to three days suffice for a summit hike and a mountain-bike ride. Arrive early to secure parking or use the Skitube from Bullocks Flat, which avoids the winding alpine road.
