Perisher Valley is the beating heart of Australia's largest ski resort, a sprawling alpine playground that transforms into a snow-covered wonderland each winter. Nestled in the Snowy Mountains, this purpose-built village offers direct ski-in/ski-out access to over 1,200 hectares of terrain, from gentle beginner slopes to challenging black runs and backcountry bowls. In summer, the valley reveals a different kind of beauty – wildflower-strewn meadows, clear mountain streams and walking trails that lead to panoramic views. Whether you're carving fresh powder or hiking through alpine heath, Perisher delivers an authentic high-country experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Ski & snowboard the four interconnected resorts – Perisher, Blue Cow, Smiggin Holes and Guthega – linked by lifts and trails, with the 8-seat Ridge Quad Express providing quick access to the summit.
- Take the Skitube Alpine Railway, a scenic 8.5 km train ride from Bullocks Flat that tunnels under the mountains and drops you right at the village, avoiding car-park hassles.
- Explore the backcountry on guided tours to Mount Perisher or the Main Range, where you'll find untouched snow and spectacular views of the Snowy River.
- Try cross-country skiing on groomed trails at the Perisher Nordic Centre, or snowshoe through silent forests – a peaceful alternative to the downhill crowds.
- Dine at altitude at the Sundeck Restaurant at the top of the Quad Express, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing the peaks, or grab a casual meal at the Mid Station bistro.
Suggested Time to Spend
A minimum of two full days is recommended to experience the main ski areas and get a feel for the valley. If you're a keen skier or boarder, extend to four days to explore all four resorts and tackle the off-piste terrain. In summer, a day trip from Jindabyne is enough for a solid walk, but overnighting allows for sunrise hikes and a more relaxed pace. During peak winter weekends, arrive early to secure parking or use the Skitube.
