Nestled at the confluence of the Paterson and Allyn Rivers, this sleepy village in the Hunter Valley feels like a step back in time. With its well-preserved 19th-century streetscape, Paterson offers a tranquil escape from the wine-touring crowds, inviting you to explore its historic buildings, paddle a canoe on the river, or simply enjoy a coffee by the water.
Highlights & What to See
- Historic Town Walk – Pick up a map from the local museum and wander past the Courthouse (1861), St. Paul’s Church, and the Paterson Inn, all beautifully restored timber and sandstone buildings.
- Paterson River – Rent a kayak or canoe from Paterson River Canoe Hire and paddle the calm waters; keep an eye out for kingfishers and kangaroos along the banks.
- Paterson Court House Museum – Housed in the old courthouse, this small museum is packed with local history, including Aboriginal artefacts and pioneer memorabilia.
- Mount Royal National Park – Just south, this park offers walks through subtropical rainforest to lookouts over the valley; the Paterson Walking Track is a rewarding half-day hike.
- Paterson Allyn River Walk – A gentle 2km loop along the river, perfect for a picnic or birdwatching, with benches and shade.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to soak up the village’s historic charm and enjoy a paddle or short walk. If you plan to hike in Mount Royal National Park or want a more leisurely pace, allocate a full day. Paterson also works well as a lunch stop on a self-drive itinerary through the lower Hunter Valley.
