Perched on a high plateau in the Central Tablelands, Oberon is a cool-climate escape that surprises visitors with its lush green landscapes, crystal-clear streams, and a thriving food scene built around local produce. Known as the gateway to the Jenolan Caves and surrounded by pine forests and national parks, this small country town offers a genuine slice of rural Australian life with an artisan edge.
Highlights & What to See
- Jenolan Caves – Just a 30-minute drive away, these limestone caves are among the oldest and most spectacular in the world. Choose from guided tours through the Lucas, Imperial, or River caves, each dripping with stalactites and underground rivers.
- Oberon Dam – A peaceful spot for a picnic, trout fishing, or a walk along the dam wall. The reflection of the surrounding forest in the still water is postcard-perfect.
- Mayfield Garden – One of Australia’s largest private cool-climate gardens, featuring 65 hectares of manicured hedges, water features, and seasonal blooms. The café here serves excellent local produce.
- Oberon Farmers Market – Held on the first Saturday of the month, this market is a treasure trove of artisan cheeses, smoked trout, honey, and seasonal vegetables. Grab a coffee and chat with the growers.
- Kanangra-Boyd National Park – For dramatic sandstone cliffs, wildflowers, and rugged bushwalking. The Boyd River Walking Track leads to stunning lookouts over the Kanangra Walls.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors base themselves in Oberon for two to three days to explore the caves, gardens, and national parks. A day trip from Sydney is possible but rushed; overnight stays allow you to enjoy the town’s relaxed pace, dine at the local pubs, and wake up to bird-filled forests. If you’re combining with the Blue Mountains, plan at least one night here.
