Deep in South Australia's limestone country, the Naracoorte Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage site that reads like a fossilised history book. These ancient chambers preserve one of the world's richest deposits of Pleistocene megafauna – think giant wombats and marsupial lions. For travellers, it's a rare chance to descend into a subterranean wonderland of stalactites, cathedral-like chambers and fossil beds, all while learning about Australia's prehistoric past.
Highlights & What to See
- Victoria Fossil Cave – The crown jewel, where you can see a jaw-dropping in-situ fossil deposit that's still being excavated. Guided tours explain how scientists piece together the ancient ecosystem.
- Wonambi Fossil Centre – A purpose-built exhibit showcasing reconstructed skeletons of extinct megafauna, including the 2.5-metre-tall Diprotodon. Perfect for understanding what you're actually seeing underground.
- Alexandra Cave – A less strenuous, family-friendly cave with stunning stalactite formations and a glass-bottomed walkway over a deep chamber. Great for first-timers.
- Blanche Cave – The only self-guided cave, where you can wander at your own pace through a vast chamber used for ballroom dancing in the 1800s. Look for the delicate 'shawl' formations.
- Bat Tour – From November to March, watch thousands of bent-wing bats emerge at dusk from the Bat Cave – a mesmerising natural spectacle.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least a full day to do justice to the caves. Most visitors book a morning tour of Victoria Fossil Cave (1.5 hours), then explore the Wonambi Fossil Centre and Alexandra Cave in the afternoon. If you're keen, add the Bat Tour in the evening. For a deeper dive, consider the two-day pass, which covers all show caves and the fossil centre.
