Just a stone's throw from Canberra, Namadgi National Park is a pristine wilderness of granite peaks, subalpine meadows, and ancient Aboriginal rock art. This is the place to escape the city and immerse yourself in the rugged beauty of the Australian Alps, where silence is broken only by the call of a lyrebird or the rustle of a wombat.
Highlights & What to See
- Yankee Hat Rock Art: A moderate walk leads to a shelter with ochre paintings of kangaroos, dingoes, and emus, some dating back 800 years. The cultural significance is profound.
- Mount Ginini: Summit this 1,762-metre peak for panoramic views over the Brindabella Range. The Alpine Bogs and Fens on the way are a Ramsar-listed wetland.
- Naas Valley: A scenic drive through pastoral valleys with opportunities to spot eastern grey kangaroos and wedge-tailed eagles.
- Orroral Valley: The historic tracking station site is now a great base for walking the Orroral Ridge Loop, with wildflowers in spring.
- Booroomba Rocks: A challenging but rewarding climb offering sheer granite cliffs and a view that stretches to the Snowy Mountains.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allocate a full day to explore the park’s highlights. A morning walk to Yankee Hat and an afternoon summit of Mount Ginini is a solid plan. If you're keen on overnight hikes, the Australian Alps Walking Trail passes through, so allow 2–3 days for a multi-day trek. The park is also a fantastic half-day detour from Canberra – just 45 minutes from the city centre.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Canberra: Australia’s capital offers world-class museums, galleries, and dining – a perfect urban counterpoint to the wild.
- Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve: Adjacent to Namadgi, this reserve is excellent for spotting platypuses and koalas in the wild.
- Yarralumla: The leafy suburb is home to the Australian National Botanic Gardens and the Governor-General’s residence.
- Brindabella National Park: A quieter neighbour with more remote walking trails and camping spots.
