Mount Warning (Wollumbin) is a striking volcanic plug that rises dramatically from the lush rainforest of northern New South Wales, offering one of Australia's most rewarding sunrise hikes. Sacred to the local Bundjalung people, this ancient peak is the remnant of a massive shield volcano that erupted 23 million years ago. The summit rewards early risers with the first rays of sunlight to hit mainland Australia, making it a bucket-list experience for hikers and nature lovers.
Highlights & What to See
- Sunrise Summit Climb: The 4.4 km return track (rated hard) takes 4–5 hours. Start in the dark with a headlamp to reach the summit for spectacular dawn views over the Tweed Valley, Gold Coast, and Byron Bay.
- Wollumbin National Park: Explore ancient rainforest, look for bowerbirds and pademelons, and cool off in the swimming holes along the Tweed River.
- Lyrebird Lookout: A shorter walk offering panoramic views without the full summit climb – ideal for those short on time or fitness.
- Bundjalung Aboriginal Cultural Significance: Mount Warning is a deeply sacred site; respect the local lore and avoid climbing on days of cultural ceremony (check with NPWS).
- Volcanic Geology: The plug is the eroded core of an ancient volcano – the surrounding caldera rim includes the Border Ranges and Nightcap National Park.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate a full morning for the sunrise climb (depart 2–3 hours before dawn) or a half-day for a more leisurely afternoon ascent. If you're not climbing, allow 1–2 hours to explore the park's lower trails and picnic areas. The experience is best combined with a stay in nearby Murwillumbah or Uki.
