Straddling the rim of an ancient shield volcano, Border Ranges National Park is a lush, mist-shrouded wilderness that feels a world away from the Hunter Valley's vineyards. Here, subtropical rainforest meets cool temperate pockets, and the air is thick with the sound of birdsong and the scent of damp earth. This is a place for those who want to trade wine for waterfalls, and cellar doors for canopy walks.
Highlights & What to See
- Antarctic Beech Walk: A short, enchanting boardwalk through a grove of ancient, moss-draped Antarctic beech trees – a living relic from the Gondwana supercontinent.
- Pinnacle Lookout: Drive or hike to this viewpoint for jaw-dropping panoramas across the Tweed Valley and out to Mount Warning. Come at sunrise if you can.
- Sheepstation Creek Circuit: A moderate 4 km loop that takes you past cascading creeks, giant strangler figs, and through towering brush box forests.
- Birdwatching: The park is a hotspot for regent bowerbirds, paradise riflebirds, and the elusive rufous scrub-bird. Bring binoculars.
- Forest Tops Walk: A wheelchair-accessible boardwalk that offers a gentle introduction to the rainforest, with interpretive signs about the park's volcanic origins.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can get a taste of the park in a half-day, focusing on the Antarctic Beech Walk and Pinnacle Lookout. However, to fully appreciate the trails and soak in the serene atmosphere, plan for a full day. Pack a picnic and plenty of water – there are no facilities inside the park. The best time to visit is during the cooler months (April to September) when the weather is mild and leeches are less active.
