Forget everything you think you know about the Gold Coast. Sure, its famous surf beaches and high-rise skyline are iconic, but this sun-drenched stretch of coastline also harbours ancient rainforests, a thriving food scene, and a surprising cultural edge. Stretching from Coolangatta in the south to Southport in the north, the Gold Coast is a destination that rewards those who look beyond the obvious.
Highlights & What to See
- Surfing Beaches – Hit the legendary breaks at Snapper Rocks, Burleigh Heads, and Duranbah. Even if you don't surf, the white-sand beaches are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and people-watching.
- Burleigh Head National Park – A coastal rainforest with dramatic ocean views. The 2.7km circuit walk takes you past pandanus palms, ancient basalt columns, and lookout points where you might spot whales (June–November).
- Springbrook National Park – A World Heritage-listed Gondwana rainforest with glow-worm caves, cascading waterfalls, and the iconic Natural Bridge. It's a 40-minute drive inland but feels like another world.
- Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary – Get up close with koalas, kangaroos, and crocodiles in a natural bush setting. The daily bird show is a riot of colour and noise.
- Coolangatta & Kirra – The laid-back southern end of the coast, with a retro surf vibe, excellent cafés, and the Sunday markets at Coolangatta Beach.
- Hinterland Food Trail – Explore the green cauldron of the Gold Coast Hinterland, where you'll find boutique wineries, cheese makers, and farm gates selling macadamias, avocados, and tropical fruit.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least three to four days to experience the Gold Coast's diversity. Spend day one on the beaches and in Burleigh Heads, day two exploring Springbrook or Lamington National Park, and day three discovering the food scene in Coolangatta and the hinterland villages. If you have a fourth day, consider a boat trip to the southern Moreton Bay Islands or a surf lesson at a gentle break. The Gold Coast is also a great base for a self-drive itinerary along the Pacific Coast, so factor in a few extra days if you're continuing north to Byron Bay or south to Sydney.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Byron Bay – A 45-minute drive south, this bohemian beach town offers a more relaxed vibe, excellent surf, and the iconic Cape Byron Lighthouse.
- Lamington National Park – A World Heritage rainforest with tree-top walks, glow-worm grottos, and abundant birdlife. It's a 90-minute drive from the coast.
- Tamborine Mountain – A lush plateau with art galleries, wineries, and the stunning Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk. Perfect for a day trip from the Gold Coast.
- Brisbane – Queensland's capital, 90 minutes north, offers world-class museums, riverfront dining, and a vibrant arts scene. Easy to combine on a longer road trip.
- Stradbroke Island – A sandy paradise with wild beaches, freshwater lakes, and abundant wildlife. Take a ferry from the mainland and explore by 4WD or on foot.
