Moreton Island, a sandy paradise just off the coast of Brisbane, is a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers. This largely untouched island is part of the Moreton Bay Marine Park, offering pristine beaches, crystal-clear lagoons, and the world's only pure blue sand lake. With its relaxed vibe and abundant wildlife, it's a perfect escape from the city.
Highlights & What to See
- Tangalooma Wrecks – Snorkel or dive among 15 deliberately sunk ships that now form a vibrant artificial reef teeming with fish, rays, and even sea turtles.
- Mount Tempest – Climb the world's highest coastal sand dune (280m) for breathtaking 360-degree views of the island and Moreton Bay.
- Blue Lagoon – Swim in the pure, silica-rich waters of this stunning freshwater lake, said to have therapeutic properties.
- Sandboarding at Big Sandhills – Glide down towering sand dunes on a board – a thrilling activity unique to the island.
- Whale Watching (June–November) – Spot humpback whales migrating through the bay; tours depart from Tangalooma Island Resort.
- 4WD Adventures – Explore the island's sandy tracks and remote beaches, but be sure to have a permit and deflate your tyres.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a day trip or an overnight stay. With its proximity to Brisbane, a day allows for snorkeling at the wrecks, a sandboarding session, and a dip in Blue Lagoon. However, to fully appreciate the island's tranquility and explore further, consider staying two to three days at the Tangalooma Island Resort or camping in designated sites. This gives you time for a sunrise hike up Mount Tempest, kayaking, and dolphin feeding at dusk.
