Maroubra is a rugged coastal suburb in Sydney's eastern beaches, beloved for its powerful surf breaks, laid-back vibe, and dramatic sandstone headlands. The name comes from an Aboriginal word meaning 'place of thunder', which perfectly captures the roar of the waves. Unlike its glitzy neighbours Bondi and Coogee, Maroubra feels refreshingly unpretentious – a place where locals hang out, kids learn to surf, and the ocean rules.
Highlights & What to See
- Maroubra Beach: A wide, patrolled beach with consistent waves – great for experienced surfers, but the southern end is calmer for swimming. The beach is backed by a grassy reserve perfect for picnics.
- Magic Point: A headland at the northern end offering a coastal walk with stunning views and, in winter, the chance to spot migrating humpback whales from the lookout.
- Mahon Pool: A historic ocean pool carved into the rock platform – perfect for a safe swim when the surf is rough. It's free and less crowded than Bondi's Icebergs.
- Maroubra Seals: A colony of Australian fur seals often seen basking on the rocks at the northern end of the beach – bring binoculars for a closer look.
- Coastal Walk: Stretch your legs on the path from Maroubra to Coogee (about 5 km one way), passing cliffs, coves, and the historic Boora Point headland.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day here: a morning surf or swim, followed by fish and chips on the grass. If you're doing the coastal walk, allow 2–3 hours one way. For a full beach day, pack a picnic and stay until sunset. Maroubra is also a great quick stop on a drive between Sydney and the Royal National Park.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Coogee: A lively beach suburb with a famous coastal walk to Bondi, plus great cafés and the historic Coogee Pavilion.
- Bondi: Sydney's most iconic beach – a 15-minute drive north, with the Bondi-to-Coogee walk offering spectacular clifftop scenery.
- La Perouse: A historic site with a fort, museum, and a boardwalk over the water – just south of Maroubra, perfect for a sunset picnic.
- Royal National Park: Australia's oldest national park, 30 minutes south, with bushwalking, waterfalls, and the scenic Figure Eight Pools (check tide times).
