Coogee is a relaxed coastal suburb of Sydney, not the Hunter Valley, but its name is often confused with the wine region. However, Coogee itself is a gem: a crescent of golden sand backed by grassy parkland and a lively beachfront strip. It’s the epitome of Sydney’s beach culture, with a classic ocean pool, a popular coastal walk, and a laid-back vibe that makes it easy to spend a whole day here.
Highlights & What to See
- Coogee Beach: The main draw – a sheltered, patrolled beach perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and people-watching. The grassy park behind it is ideal for picnics.
- Coogee Ocean Pool: A historic seawater pool at the southern end, great for lap swimming with ocean views.
- Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk: A stunning 6km clifftop path linking Coogee to Bondi, passing through beaches like Clovelly and Bronte, with lookout points and rock pools.
- Wylie’s Baths: Another iconic ocean pool, just south of Coogee Beach, built in 1907 and offering a more rustic experience.
- Coogee Pavilion: A huge, buzzy pub and restaurant complex right on the beach, perfect for a drink or meal with a view.
- Dunningham Reserve: A park at the northern end with barbecues, playgrounds, and a great spot for sunset.
Suggested Time to Spend
Coogee can be enjoyed in a half-day if you’re just hitting the beach and having lunch, but to properly soak up the coastal walk and maybe swim at both pools, allow a full day. Pair it with a morning at Bondi or Bronte for a classic Sydney beach day. The walk itself takes about 1.5–2 hours one way, so you could start at Coogee, walk to Bondi, and catch a bus back.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Bondi Beach: Sydney’s most famous beach, just a 2-hour walk or short bus ride away.
- Bronte Beach: A smaller, family-friendly beach with a great park and café scene, en route on the coastal walk.
- Clovelly Beach: A narrow, sheltered bay popular for snorkelling, also on the walk.
- Randwick: A nearby suburb with a historic racecourse, good restaurants, and the Royal Randwick Shopping Centre.
- Centennial Park: A huge park in Sydney’s east with cycling, horse riding, and ponds, a short drive from Coogee.
