Killalea State Park is a rugged coastal haven on the NSW South Coast, beloved by surfers and nature lovers for its wild beauty and uncrowded beaches. This former defence training area now offers pristine headland walks, world-class reef breaks, and a laid-back campground vibe that feels a world away from the nearby holiday towns.
Highlights & What to See
- The Farm & Mystics beaches – Two legendary right-hand reef breaks that draw experienced surfers; even if you don't surf, the dramatic waves and rocky headlands are mesmerising to watch.
- Killalea Headland walking track – A short but stunning coastal loop offering panoramic views over the Pacific, with excellent whale-watching from June to November.
- Lagoon & picnic area – The peaceful brackish lagoon behind the dunes is perfect for a calm paddle or birdwatching; shaded picnic tables make for a relaxed lunch spot.
- Camping under the stars – The basic campground (no powered sites) is a favourite for those wanting to fall asleep to the sound of the ocean; book ahead in peak season.
- Aboriginal cultural heritage – The headland contains significant midden sites and stone arrangements; take time to appreciate the deep Indigenous connection to this landscape.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day exploring the headland walk and lagoon, plus a couple of hours watching the surf or swimming (when conditions are calm). If you're camping, a full day and overnight is ideal — you'll have time for a sunrise walk, a surf session, and a relaxed evening barbecue. The park is compact, so you won't need a full day unless you're planning to surf multiple sessions.
