Nestled between the sandstone escarpments of Morton National Park, Kangaroo Valley is a bucolic pocket of dairy farms, historic hamlets, and the meandering Kangaroo River. It's a place where the pace slows to a country stroll, and the main street – lined with heritage buildings and a famous wooden bridge – feels like a movie set. For travellers driving from Sydney or the South Coast, this valley offers a perfect dose of rural charm with a side of bushwalking and paddling.
Highlights & What to See
- Hampden Bridge – Australia’s last surviving wooden suspension bridge, spanning the river with a postcard-perfect silhouette. Walk across for views of the valley and spot platypuses in the river below at dawn or dusk.
- Kangaroo River – Canoe, kayak, or tube its gentle currents. Several operators offer hire and shuttles for a lazy half-day float past dairy cows and forested banks.
- Bendeela Recreation Area – A popular camping and picnic spot with a grassy riverbank and resident wombats that emerge at dusk. Great for a barbecue and a swim in summer.
- Fitzroy Falls – A short drive into Morton National Park, this dramatic 81-metre waterfall plunges into a rainforest gorge. The lookout is wheelchair-accessible, and longer trails connect to the Wild Dog and East Rim walks.
- Kangaroo Valley Village – The heritage main street is home to a great bakery, the Friendly Inn pub, and the Pioneer Museum (housed in the old post office). Browse the artisan shops for local honey, cheese, and pottery.
Suggested Time to Spend
Kangaroo Valley works beautifully as a weekend escape. With two nights you can canoe the river, hike to a waterfall, and enjoy a long lunch at one of the valley’s farm-to-table cafés. If you’re passing through on a road trip between Sydney and Jervis Bay, a half-day is enough to walk the bridge, grab a pie from the bakery, and dip your toes in the river. For a deeper bush experience, add a day to explore the longer trails in Morton National Park.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Fitzroy Falls – Already mentioned, but worth highlighting as an easy add-on for a waterfall fix.

- Shoalhaven Coast – The broader region includes wineries, the historic village of Milton, and the scenic beaches of Mollymook and Ulladulla.
