Iluka is a serene coastal village at the mouth of the Clarence River, where the river meets the sea in a sweep of golden sand and protected rainforest. This is a place for those who want to slow down, breathe deeply, and connect with one of New South Wales's most significant natural areas. The town's name means 'beautiful place by the sea' in an Aboriginal language, and it delivers on that promise with uncrowded beaches, a world-class national park, and a laid-back fishing-village atmosphere that feels a world away from the tourist trail.
Highlights & What to See
- Iluka Nature Reserve & World Heritage Rainforest – Walk the Iluka Rainforest Walk through a remnant of the 'Big Scrub', one of the most ancient rainforests on Earth, with towering figs and a canopy alive with birds. The short Iluka Bluff Track offers panoramic views over the coast and river mouth.
- Iluka Beach – A long, wild surf beach perfect for long walks, fishing, and watching the waves. It's patrolled in summer and often nearly empty even on weekends.
- Clarence River Fishing & Cruises – The river is famous for its fishing – try your luck from the breakwall or join a charter for bream, flathead, and mulloway. River cruises offer a relaxed way to spot dolphins and pelicans.
- Bundjalung National Park – Just south of town, this park protects coastal heath, wetlands, and the stunning Jerusalem Creek. Drive the beach or walk the trails to spot kangaroos and sea eagles.
- Iluka Bowling Club – The social heart of town, with a cold beer, a hearty meal, and friendly locals. It's the perfect spot to watch the sun set over the river.
Suggested Time to Spend
Iluka is best savoured over two to three days, allowing time to explore the rainforest walks, relax on the beach, and take a river cruise. If you're on a tight schedule, a full day can cover the nature reserve and a beach visit, but you'll wish you'd stayed longer. The town is small, so you can easily combine it with a visit to nearby Yamba or the Clarence Valley.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Yamba – Just across the river, Yamba is a vibrant surf town with excellent cafes, boutiques, and the famous Yamba Lighthouse. A ferry or short drive connects the two.
- Maclean – Known as 'the Scottish town in Australia', Maclean has tartan-clad lampposts, a Highland spirit, and great views from the Lookout.
- Grafton – The heritage city of Grafton is famous for its jacaranda trees (blooming in November) and historic buildings, offering a dose of culture and riverfront charm.
- Yuraygir National Park – Stretching along the coast south of Iluka, this park offers stunning coastal walks, secluded beaches, and excellent birdwatching.
