Stretching along the wild seam between escarpment and ocean, the Illawarra Coastal Walk is a multi-day trek that reveals the raw beauty of New South Wales' south coast. This 60-kilometer path links a string of dramatic sea cliffs, pocket-sized beaches, and lush rainforest patches, offering walkers an intimate encounter with a landscape shaped by surf and sandstone. From the industrial poetry of Wollongong's steelworks to the serene sands of Kiama, the trail weaves through national parks and seaside villages, making it a standout for travelers seeking both solitude and a deep sense of place.
Highlights & What to See
- Wollongong Head Lighthouse & Flagstaff Hill – A photogenic lighthouse perched on a rocky headland, with panoramic views of the city and coastline; look for migrating whales between May and November.
- Stanwell Park to Coalcliff – A thrilling cliff-top section with sheer drops and the iconic Sea Cliff Bridge, a cantilevered road that hugs the escarpment; the bridge has a separate walking path for safe viewing.
- Bald Hill Lookout – Famous for hang-gliding and paragliding, this vantage point offers a bird's-eye view of the entire Illawarra coast; on clear days you can see as far as Sydney.
- Kiama Blowhole & Little Blowhole – Two natural blowholes that spout seawater high into the air at high tide; the main blowhole is one of the largest in the world.
- Minnamurra Rainforest – A detour into Budderoo National Park where a boardwalk loops through a temperate rainforest with towering tree ferns and a cascading waterfall.
- Seven Mile Beach National Park – A pristine stretch of sand backed by coastal heath and dunes, ideal for a rest day or a swim; the park is also a haven for birdlife.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers tackle the full 60-kilometer route over three to five days, camping or staying in budget accommodations along the way. A common pace is two days from Wollongong to Kiama (about 30 km), breaking at the coastal town of Stanwell Park or Thirroul. If you're short on time, focus on the most scenic 15-kilometer section between Stanwell Park and Bald Hill, which can be done as a half-day walk. Allow extra time for detours to Minnamurra Rainforest and Kiama's blowholes.
