Carved by the meandering Goulburn River through dramatic sandstone gorges, this less-visited national park in the Hunter Valley rewards those who venture off the main drag with wild swimming holes, Aboriginal rock art and a profound sense of solitude. It’s a place for paddlers, hikers and anyone craving a genuine bush escape without the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Goulburn River canoeing & swimming: Paddle the calm, tea-coloured river past towering cliffs and sandy beaches; the Big River and Kerrabee sections are perfect for a half-day float with swim stops.
- Aboriginal rock art at Big River Camp: A short walk leads to a sheltered overhang with ochre hand stencils and motifs – a tangible link to the Wonnarua people who have lived here for millennia.
- Kerrabee Lookout: A 10-minute climb rewards with a sweeping panorama of the river snaking through the valley, especially golden at sunset.
- Spring Gully walking track: A moderate 6 km loop through scribbly gum woodland and heath, alive with birdlife (watch for glossy black-cockatoos) and wildflowers in spring.
- Camping under the stars: Basic riverside campsites at Kerrabee and Big River offer a true off-grid experience – bring your own water and gear.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring the river and short walks, but to truly absorb the park’s quiet magic, plan an overnight camping trip. A weekend allows time for a longer paddle (the 15 km stretch from Kerrabee to Big River is a classic) and a proper look at the rock art. If you’re just passing through, a 2–3 hour stop for a swim and a walk to Kerrabee Lookout is still worthwhile.
