Step into a world that has remained virtually unchanged for millions of years. The Gondwana Rainforests, a UNESCO World Heritage site stretching across northern New South Wales and into Queensland, are a living museum of ancient plant and animal life. These lush, subtropical forests are home to some of the oldest ferns, cycads, and towering Antarctic beech trees, offering a rare glimpse into the continent's prehistoric past. For nature lovers and hikers, this is an unmissable destination that feels like walking through a dinosaur-era landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Dorrigo National Park – Walk the Skywalk boardwalk through the canopy for bird's-eye views of the rainforest, then descend into the Crystal Shower Falls circuit for a closer look at cascading water and ancient moss-covered boulders.
- Washpool National Park – One of the largest remaining stands of subtropical rainforest in the world, with excellent hiking trails like the Coombadjha Walk that leads to a stunning lookout over the park's vast green expanse.
- New England National Park – Home to the dramatic Point Lookout, offering sweeping views over the escarpment and into the deep valleys below. Keep an eye out for lyrebirds and pademelons.
- Border Ranges National Park – A biodiversity hotspot with ancient red cedars and the chance to spot the rare Albert's lyrebird. The Tweed Range Scenic Drive offers a fantastic self-drive route through the park.
- Nightlife – Join a guided nocturnal walk to see glowing fungi, possums, and the elusive greater glider. The rainforest comes alive after dark.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly appreciate the Gondwana Rainforests, plan for at least 3–4 days. This allows you to explore a couple of the major parks at a relaxed pace, with time for a few short hikes and a night walk. If you're short on time, a two-day itinerary focusing on Dorrigo and New England National Parks will give you a solid taste of the region's grandeur. Self-driving is the best way to hop between the parks, as public transport is limited.
