Flinders Ranges

South Australia’s Flinders Ranges rise like a rust-red spine from the desert plains, a dramatic landscape of ancient mountain ranges, deep gorges, and vast salt lakes. This is a place where the earth’s history is written in the rocks – fossilised stromatolites, Aboriginal rock art, and the dramatic remnants of an inland sea. The region is a paradise for hikers, wildlife watchers, and anyone seeking profound solitude under impossibly starry skies.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

To truly appreciate the Flinders Ranges, plan for at least three to four days. This allows time for a full-day hike in Wilpena Pound, a scenic drive through Brachina Gorge, and a sunrise visit to Bunyeroo Lookout. If you have only two days, focus on the national park and a short walk; with five days you can add a side trip to the outback towns of Blinman or Parachilna. The region rewards a slow pace – don’t rush the sunsets.
